Twice-exceptional (2e) students possess a unique blend of intellectual giftedness and neurodivergence.  They may excel in certain areas, such as math, science, or creative arts, while facing challenges in other areas with diagnoses such as:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD Level 1)
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD)

At The Sage School, we understand the complex needs of 2e students. We are committed to providing a supportive and stimulating environment that empowers these students to reach their full potential.

If your child exhibits the following characteristics, they may be a good fit for our program:

  • Intellectual Giftedness: High cognitive abilities, advanced thinking skills, and a strong curiosity.
  • Learning Differences: Challenges in areas such as reading, writing, math, attention, or social skills.
  • Unique Learning Style: A preference for self-directed learning, a need for flexible pacing, or a desire for in-depth exploration of topics.
  • Intense Interests: A deep passion for specific subjects or hobbies.

While we generally look for an overall IQ score of 115 or above, we recognize that standardized tests may not accurately reflect the abilities of 2e students. For many twice-exceptional individuals, they tend to present with a "peaks and valleys" profile that can affect their overall score. Instead, we examine each index and subtest to look for areas of exceptional strength. We prioritize a holistic review of each applicant, considering the following:

  • Cognitive Assessments: We examine cognitive profiles to identify areas of strength and weakness. As part of the application process, we ask for current private psychoeducational or neuropsychological testing. If you have not had your child privately tested, we ask for any psychoeducational testing that was done when the IEP was initiated. If an intelligence (IQ) test was not administered as part of the testing, you may be required to have one done if we feel we do not have sufficient evidence of your child's cognitive or academic abilities.
  • Academic Records: We review academic transcripts, standardized test scores, and teacher recommendations.
  • Parent Reports: We value the insights and perspectives of parents and caregivers.
  • Student Interviews: We conduct interviews to assess the student's motivation, interests, and social skills.

If you believe your child may be twice-exceptional and would like to learn more about our program, please don't hesitate to contact our admissions office. We are happy to discuss your child's specific needs and explore potential opportunities at The Sage School.
